THE BETH CAREW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

2006-2007

(The application period for 2006-7 has closed)

For Undergraduate Students with Bleeding Disorders
Sponsored by AHF®, Inc. – The Hemophilia Disease Management Company

Who was Beth Carew and why has AHF created a scholarship in her honor?  Beth was an energetic, bright, loving, and caring woman.  She was a person with determination and spunk.  She was deeply concerned about her family and her community.  She was one of the very few women to have hemophilia A.  Beth Carew died in 1994 of complications associated with hemophilia.

AHF has created a special scholarship in her memory because she was a model for us all.  She was an outspoken advocate for the needs of families with bleeding disorders and for the needs of women who were in any way affected by bleeding disorders.  She was a prime mover in the creation of WONN, the Women’s Outreach Network of the National Hemophilia Foundation, the national grassroots movement of women affected by bleeding.  She was determined to help create a national movement that would recognize and strive to meet the needs of women.

She was a kind and compassionate soul and a relentless fighter.  She lived and died with the challenges of hemophilia.  She was truly a woman of whom we all can be proud.  We at AHF, joined by the Carew family, are proud to offer this scholarship program to young people and adults with bleeding disorders to assist in their efforts to obtain a higher education.

 The Scholarship Program

We believe that knowledge is the key to the future for our community.  We are daily inspired by the successes of young people and adults living with the challenges of bleeding disorders.  We, at AHF, are proud to continue to support our community as we have for the past 15 years.  That support has included hemophilia camps, local chapter programs, the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF), the Hemophilia Federation, and WFH annual meetings.  It has included Operation Access, scholarships for families to attend the Annual NHF meetings, scholarships for families to join NHF, and funding the NHF Judith Graham Poole research grants program.  It has also included contributing to the NHF’s national campaign to fund research for a cure for bleeding disorders called It’s Time for a Cure in the amount of $1,000,000.  In addition AHF sponsors the national Cure Bear campaign.   In this campaing, families across the country have used our “Bear With Us….” program to raise over $20,000 for It’s Time for a Cure.  In 2002 we added the Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship program to our extensive charitable giving program.

In the fall of 2002, AHF awarded five (5) higher education scholarships, each in the amount of $2,000.  The scholarship awards have been used to cover tuition, books, and/or housing expenses.  Scholarship awards are dispersed directly to the college or university in which the full-time student is registered. Five scholarships were awarded to deserving students with bleeding disorders.

In 2003, 2004, and 2005 we awarded five scholarships to undergraduate students  in the bleeding disorders community.  We wish them ongoing success in their educational and life pursuits.

In 2006-2007, AHF will again competitively award five (5) scholarships to full-time registered undergraduate students in good standing or entering Freshmen, each in the amount of $2,000.  Awards are restricted to young adults and adults who have hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, or another related inherited bleeding disorder. Scholarship awards are designed to support full-time undergraduate students entering or attending an accredited college or university in the United States.

Who is Eligible for an AHF Scholarship?

Any student with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, or a related inherited bleeding disorder is eligible to apply for this Scholarship as long as s/he meets the criteria outlined above.  In 2006, high school seniors who have been accepted to an accredited college or university may apply.  College freshmen, sophomores, and juniors may also apply.

The Process

The 2006 – 2007 process will be as follows.  The application is available below.  They are also being distributed to chapters, Hemophilia Treatment Centers, the National Hemophilia Foundation, and national and community organizations.  The 2006-2007 applications will be due at the corporate offices of AHF no earlier than February 1 and no later than April 15, 2006 and awards will be announced by in mid-May 2006.  Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.  Scholarship award winners will be featured on our web site.

An impartial panel of lay people, educators, and medical providers from the bleeding disorders community will review and judge applications.  Criteria will include academic excellence, community service, recommendations, and personal statements.

Scholarship Funds

Scholarship funds will be awarded in two equal payments of $1000 during the academic year.  Payments will be made directly to the institution, one payment in August/September, and one payment in December/January.  Scholarship recipients must demonstrate successful completion of the first semester or quarter(s) in order to receive the second payment for that academic year.  If a recipient were to fail to complete the first semester (or quarters) in good academic standing, the second payment of this award would not be made.

AHF is delighted to give back to our community in this way.  Providing educational opportunities for young people is very important to us.  We have maintained a strong Department of Education for the past 10 years, focusing on both consumer education and education for professionals.  We have developed and continue to distribute an excellent series of educational brochures on the care and management of bleeding disorders.  We have provided funding for the educational efforts of NHF, other national and international bleeding disorders organizations, as well as local chapters.  We wish you the very best of luck as you pursue your dreams.   Application below.
